Job Description





Performs a variety of routine and specialized duties to maintain security, custody and control to ensure the health and safety of inmates, staff, volunteers, and the public.


Listed under competencies are the essential functions of the position. [This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description. These include, but are not limited to, the following requirements. 


1. Maintains security of facility by observing and controlling inmate behavior, enforcing
discipline, and reporting observations;

2. Inspects the living conditions within the housing units for compliance with sanitation objectives;

3. Conducts checks of inmate housing and cell searches for inmate census and detection of

4. Controls, operates, and inspects life safety equipment, electronic safety and surveillance
equipment, and door control systems;

5. Monitors visitors/volunteers entering and exiting the facility;

6. Monitor video and inmate communications via new technologies;

7. Performs booking, fingerprinting, identification, and records maintenance procedures;

8. Participates in evacuation procedures and maintains security in emergency situations;

9. Provides information to inmates and the public regarding corrections facility rules and

10. Maintains security of prisoners transported to the holding area in the Courts building and
provides a safe environment within courtrooms and surrounding areas;

14. Participates in the investigation and compilation of information regarding inmate grievances
and disciplinary hearings;

15. Maintains appropriate security and confidentiality of all information and materials encountered
in the performance the officers duties;

16. Assists in updating policies, operational procedures, programs, and statistical data;

• High school diploma or equivalent or

• An associate’s Degree in correctional sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice administration,
public administration, or closely related field is preferred


• Considerable knowledge of modern corrections principles, procedures, techniques, and

Special Requirements:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.

• Must possess, or be able to obtain a valid State Driver's License without record of suspension or
 revocation in any state.

• Ability to meet and maintain department's physical and fitness standards;

• Completion of Michigan Sheriff's Training and Coordination Training Counsel 160 Hour Training
 Academy, Physical Agility Testing, and Mental Health Evaluation.

• The ability to multi-task in a highly paced environment while working with security and
 electronics while being aware of your surroundings at all times;

• Able to work in areas with large groups or numbers of inmates;

• Carries and safely deploys department approved and issued firearms / tasers and other defensive weapons when so directed;

Physical Requirements:

• May be required to: climb or reach, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear, use

• May occasionally be required to lift/move over 100 pounds.

1. Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays for this 24-hour operation; and

2. Confined building and spaces.

3. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, infectious diseases.

fellow co-workers or other inmates.


Salary Range $13.53 - $17.69 /hr for Correctional Officer

Promotional Potential to $19.25/hr for Corrections Corporal
